HCG 906 and its unshown mate, both sporting England flags, are 1940 and 1942 Rudge Whitworth and James Autocycles. They attracted a lot of attention, from the “what’s that?” “how does it work” (you pedal like crazy then let the clutch out while revving, if you’re lucky it’ll start, if not, keep pedalling) to the “the insurance man who used to visit my parents once a week had one of these.”
We parked the van at Longstowe as Longstowe-Meldreth was far enough for a boneshaking ride, and the James only broke down once in each direction (blocked fuel filter). Big adjustable spanner and an oily rag solves most things.
