Position: IT Specialist

Responsibilities & Duties: Ensuring that all computers in the building run smoothly, and maintain the highest uptime and availability possible. Other duties include upgrading, maintaining and managing the backup solution, managing the Sun GridEngine cluster of more than 80 machines, managing the data storage machines and installing, configuring and maintaining all other machines, including desktop Linux machines running VMware, and the remaining miscellaneous servers.

My responsibilities cover software, hardware and the network as a whole. I think it is also important to mention that I am the only IT person on site for perhaps 20-30 hours of a 40 hour week, so I am relied upon frequently to get tasks done. I have also installed and configured various PHP/MySQL web-based systems such as a ticket-based support system, a vacation tracking system, a meeting room booking system and a comprehensive bug tracking system.

Position: Web Technologist (Global eServices Support Group)

Responsibilities & Duties: Helping to ensure that any problems with any of the supported Sun web sites, including the Online Support Center, SunStore and MySun, get looked into or fixed, therefore keeping them available for the maximum time possible, keeping the team notified of current issues, checking monitoring alarms that are triggered and keeping our group's corporate intranet site up-to-date with the latest support and outage information, among other duties.

Position: HelpDesk Assistant

Responsibilities & Duties: Helping customers to fix problems with the computers, advising on what to do in certain situations, logging calls that cannot be fixed at the time of enquiry, keeping computer labs tidy and in order, and alerting security to anything illegal going on in the building.
